With Trump Returning and Hezbollah Weakened, Iran Strikes a Conciliatory Tone


As Iran faces domestic and foreign challenges, its bellicose rhetoric on the United States and Israel has given way to signs that it wants less confrontation.
Taken together, these challenges forced Iran to recalibrate its approach, to one of defusing tensions, the current Iranian officials familiar with the planning said. They asked for anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly, which could put them in danger.
They said Iran suspended plans to strike Israel following Mr. Trump’s election because it did not want to exacerbate tensions with the incoming administration, which was already lining up cabinet nominees who were hostile to Iran and staunch supporters of Israel. Mr. Trump’s stated plans to end the wars in the Middle East and Ukraine, however, appealed to Iran, the officials said.


Before the U.S. election was even held, Iran sent word to the Biden administration that, contrary to claims by some American intelligence officials, it was not plotting to assassinate Mr. Trump.


Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Wednesday that Iran welcomed the truce between Hezbollah and Israel, adding that “Tehran maintains its right to respond to Israel’s airstrikes on Iran last month, but it will take into consideration regional developments such as the cease-fire in Lebanon.”

The NYT reports that Trump's victory has rattled Iran. If Trump can calm down the Middle East, that will just leave the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.


Not bad, considering Trump hasn't even been sworn in yet.

I hope he does stop sending OUR money to Ukraine where there is a reported alleged 50% theft of that money and military stuff not arriving where it is supposed to be.

Get that war to stop and stabilize the region, get the brain dead Europeons to stop their delusional fantasies of Russia wanting to invade and conquer Europe.

I agree. He needs to negotiate a settlement.

Everyone has taken notice in that region to Trumps victory. Strong leadership always makes heads turn and people rethink what they are doing.  I am not sure how the Ukraine conflict will turn out, but Trump is sending strong signals to both leaders to come to the table. Iran and the ME all know what kind of tariffs and damage can be inflicted in a very short term and they are trying to settle things before Trump enters office and forces their hands. 

I am amazed at the clout that Trump has all over the world.  Trump knows how to wield a big stick but use it only when provoked.
